Should you try the ketogenic diet?
Like anything we follow trends, and in nutrition it is no different. What is trending quite popular now and what looks likely to remain is the ketogenic diet. I am no expert in knowing how effective the keto diet is, however I have experimented it and found it was enjoyable and challenging.
What is the Keto diet?
The Keto diet is a high fat 70%, average protein 25% minimum carb 5% of your total daily calorie intake. Along with adequate water intake.
What happens?
Essentially the body has barely any glucose stored so it uses ketones to break down body fat for energy (Ketosis). This is one on the main reasons why you see fast results on the Keto diet.
Signs you are in ketosis?
Bad breath - Yes I know, however this is something you can get round through water intake. Most likely you will experience first thing in the morning.
Better brain function - Sometimes you have to ask yourself if you are functioning better, but I found to be more alert.
Rapid weight loss - Over 2-4 weeks you may see drastic changing in your weight.
Pee test - Testing whether your urine is purple using ketosis strips
Why is it so popular?
Diabetic people
If you are someone that wants to drastically change their health, the keto diet essentially controls your insulin production and keeps blood sugar levels well balanced.
Weight loss/Fat loss results
Result have shown how the ketogenic diet works. Research has shown the health benefits that have come with the diet.
*You must remember like any diet to lose weight you must be in a calorie deficit*
Disadvantages of Keto
Potential muscle loss
Due to lack of carbs in the diet i would be not the best thing for someone who wants to sustain muscle to be on a ketogenic diet.
Low carbs
Some people love carbs, so removing them completely can be a massive change.
Culturally not sustainable for Brunei
Bruneian culture is most know for the food, so with the food comes high carb intake. Carbs are very hard to get away from, whether that be at an special event or just eating with the family. So for some Bruneian's it would be a bigger challenge to adopt.
Summary
Would I recommend the Keto diet?
Yes and No. If the person has a lifestyle that is going to be sustainable for them to achieve the diet without having to sacrifice themselves socially long term. In Brunei the culture is based around eating, so avoiding eating the most common marco (carbs) long term won't be sustainable to most people. (My opinion). Remember your water intake is very important.
